Verity Claims Management (“Verity”), respects the privacy of personal information. This Privacy Policy applies to the personal information that Verity collects, uses or discloses in the course of providing its insurance claims investigation/management services.
“Personal information” is information about an identifiable individual, including name, date of birth, and age. Personal information does not include the name, business title, address or phone number of an employee of an organization. Personal information may also include information related to or arising from an individual’s relationship with Verity (for example, information provided during the claims investigation/management process).
Verity collects, uses and, in certain instances, discloses, personal information in the course of providing insurance claims services to insurers. These insurance claims services include the investigation of insurance claims, administration of claims, claims reporting services and the prevention and identification of fraud which activities are conducted on behalf of one or more insurers. These services also include risk management advisory services.
Verity will only collect the personal information that is necessary for the performance of its insurance claims services. Verity shall, when possible, collect personal information directly from the person to whom the information relates. When necessary, Verity may collect, verify or exchange information with independent sources and/or organizations and with the insurer who has appointed Verity to provide insurance claims services.
Sometimes in performing insurance claims services Verity (or the relevant insurer) may use or disclose personal information to comply with legal and regulatory requirements and for statistical purposes. In the event of a claim, individuals can expect Verity to provide the insurer of the claim with all information about the claim.
Verity may also share information about claims with the Appraisal Institute of Canada but this will be done strictly on an anonymized and de-identified basis to use for educational, training and loss prevention purposes only.
In addition, Verity may disclose personal information to third party service providers who provide services to it. Verity requires all such service providers to keep personal information confidential and secure and to have privacy policies and security standards with respect to personal information that are comparable to Verity’s.
In some instances, personal information in our possession or control may be stored or processed in, or accessed from, foreign jurisdiction and, as such, may be accessible to the government, courts, law enforcement or regulatory agencies of that foreign jurisdiction through its laws.
Verity will not trade, sell or rent personal information to any third parties.
Verity shall obtain consent for the collection, use and/or disclosure of personal information, except where inappropriate. Personal information will not be used without consent for purposes other than those for which it was collected. If Verity wishes to use personal information for new or additional purposes, it will obtain consent for such new or additional purposes before doing so.
Verity will make every effort to ensure the accuracy of the personal information it collects. However, Verity relies on individuals to advise Verity of any changes in their personal information.
Individuals have the right to access, update, and correct inaccuracies in their personal information in Verity’s custody and control, subject to certain exceptions prescribed by law. If an individual wishes to update or request access to, or correction of, personal information in Verity’s records, or to make inquiries or complaints, they must contact Verity at the address below. Verity will need to verify the individual’s identity before providing the personal information Verity holds.
Verity may not be able to provide access to personal information if the information cannot be separated from the records of others, cannot be disclosed for reasons of security or commercial confidentiality, or is protected by legal privilege. If Verity cannot provide access to personal information, Verity will advise of the reasons access is being denied, unless prohibited by law from doing so.
There is no cost for such request unless copies of records are required. Verity will advise of the cost, if any, prior to copying those records.
Verity has adopted security measures appropriate to the sensitivity of the information to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss or theft. Access to personal information is limited to Verity’s employees and representatives and those of the insurer which has appointed Verity in respect of any claim and who need to know the information to administer the insurance and related services.
Verity shall only retain personal information for as long as is required to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected. When personal information is no longer necessary, Verity will take steps to destroy or render anonymous such information in accordance with the requirements of the insurer on whose behalf Verity acts. Some personal information may be kept indefinitely depending on any ongoing exposure to potential claims and the requirements of any insurer that has appointed Verity.
